This set of five buttons features the profile of a head of state, possibly King George IV. Buttons made of coins such as this set were traditionally worn by Peranakan men and usually adopted from American or European coins. This set of coin buttons was probably specially designed and are not real coins. Other than coins, buttons worn by men were usually made of silver, bakelite, ivory, amber and bone. In contrast, buttons worn by Peranakan women were more ornamented and decorated with filigree gold, gilt silver and diamonds.
