In Peranakan Chinese-style furniture, cupboards were made in a variety of styles and namwood was typically used in its manufacture. This cupboard, ornately carved in what has come to be known as Peranakan Chinese 'brown and gold', is made of glided teak. Sometime in the early 20th century, when a blockade was imposed in the import of glided namwood cupboards into the region, glided teak was used instead.Two-tier glided teak cupboards are some of the most sought after Peranakan Chinese furniture. While this cupboard is not a rare piece, one of this quality of carving, certainly is. Cupboards like the example shown here, were commissioned as part of a wedding trousseau for the bride.
