Here one can see the side of the Raffles monument, and in the distance, Government Offices, the third pavilion of the Cricket Club built in 1884 and the French-inspired Supreme Court. When Singapore celebrated its centennial on 6 February 1919, the statue of Raffles was removed from this location at the Esplanade and installed in front of the Town Hall where it stands now. This spot had been occupied by the bronze elephant statue donated by King Chulalongkorn in 1871, which was relocated to a position at the Supreme Court that eventually became Parliament House. Today, the building is called The Arts House at Old Parliament.Wet-collodion plates, which were in use at this time, were over-sensitive to blue light. This meant that skies were often over-exposed, and cloud detail was lost, presenting a harsh, featureless sky, as seen in this photograph.
