Lotus Series (Long)

Born in 1959 in Singapore, Tung Yue Nang studied Chinese ink painting under master Shi Xiang Tuo. Best known for his photo-realist painting style Tung has exhibited since the late 1970s, receiving in 2002, from The Singapore Art Society, the Tan Tze Chor Art Award (Chinese Ink Painting category). The four works, ‘Lotus Series (Pink)’, ‘Lotus Series (White)’, ‘Lotus Series (Long)’, and ‘One Series’, trace the maturing of Tung's style. His primary interest in these was the line and the dot, design fundamentals that also have roots in Chinese calligraphy. The three works in the Lotus Series show a cross section of development in picture concept and objectivity. The lotus buds are the dots, and the stalks are the line. They are static, however, the photo-realist representation imbues them with a glowing life. This kind of contrast characterises most of Tung's art till 2000.
