Born in 1946 in Malaysia, self-taught painter and sculptor Thang Kiang How’s talent and community service is variously recognised, including: Singapore’s Public Service Medal (1981), Dr Tan Tsze Chor Award (1982), and Special Award, UOB Painting of the Year competition (1985, 1986 and 1987). Exhibiting nationally and internationally, Thang was also President of the Modern Art Society Singapore (1981-93).With this painting Thang returns to his artistic roots of painting nature, particularly mountains. He began his ‘Blue Mountain’ series in 1980 (marking his gradual shift away from realism) as a result of frequent business trips to China. The vastness of the land, with its trees and mountains, captured Thang’s spirit and under whose inspirational influence he clearly remained a decade later: “I love painting nature, particularly mountains. Mountains ‘live’, changing from hour to hour. I chose to paint the mountains blue not to suggest melancholia but peace and quietness”.
