Blooming Chrysanthemums

Born in Singapore in 1955, Lim Tiong Ghee is a self-taught artist renowned for his abstract collages. He was Category Winner (Representational), UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1984 with his ‘Reflection’ watercolour painting, and in 1989 Lim received the Competition’s Top Award for his wrapping paper collage ‘From the Turtledove’.In Lim’s earliest collages, figurative images of tropical flora, luscious fruits, and Chinese delicacies are predominant. As Lim honed his technical skills and style, he drew inspiration from his immediate surroundings, taking his references from everyday and readily available examples. There is a strong decorative element – a pleasing balance of composed shapes of paper and a harmonious layering of translucent colours, neatly contained and bordered within the base paper’s edges. The works are delicate without appearing fragile, with stylistic hints of Lim’s Chinese heritage, all characteristics mimicking the qualities of the paper used.
