Born in 1959 in Singapore, Angeline Choo Ai Loon (daughter of artist Choo Keng Kwang) graduated in 1980 from Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Followed by multiple accolades, in 1982 Choo was commissioned to create orchid paintings for presentation by the Singapore government during the 15th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting. With nearly 22,000 species of orchids to choose from, including Singapore’s National Flower the Vanda Miss Joaquim, Choo selected the most common Cattleya Hybrid orchid as subject for her numerous trademark paintings. Extending beyond the realm of botanical study, Choo’s humble orchids are staged in a poetic setting of butterflies, dragonflies, floating root systems and misted soft-focus lighting. Historically found in rainforests, the natural isolation of these orchids for Choo denotes freedom and unspoilt purity. Their pristine beauty, conveyed by a multitude of shapes and colours, offers an antidote to encroaching civilisation and urbanisation.
