Chua has painted portraitures of prominent public figures, including presidents and prime ministers of Singapore. Besides portraitures, Chua also paints nationalistic and local scenes of Singapore, which serve as historical documentations of the nation’s changing landscape.KK is the abbreviation of ’kandang kerbau’ (buffalo pens) and refers to the abattoirs that were in the market area between Hastings Road and Sungei Road along Rochor Canal till the 1920s. A strong diagonal arrangement puts the crowd in the background, allowing the viewer’s gaze to linger over the details of the fish stall in the foreground. This market scene can still be found in wet markets around Singapore today.
