Born in 1940 in Singapore, Leo Hee Tong graduated from Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1960, and from Japan’s Ashiya Art College in 1973. A recipient of numerous awards since 1975, Leo has exhibited his paintings in exhibitions and cultural exchange festivals around the world. The two works "Window" and "Door of Memory" are from a body of work Leo created for his 1992 “Expression of Time” solo exhibition. These works displayed Leo’s new focus on doorways and windows set within dilapidated walls, and the history and inherent beauty that these walled portals held. The artist retained his signature treatment of the canvas surface, thick and textural, as well as his minimal gestural strokes. However, there is boldness in Leo’s broad layering of colour, creating slight allusions of depth in an otherwise flat pictorial plane – a tight composition where colour and texture directs the viewer’s focus.
