Head of a bodhisattva

The refined facial expression of this bodhisattva suggests influence of Hellenic style of Bactria and early Gandharan sculpture. The design of the hair and jewellery is very intricate and the ornaments are filled with religious symbolism that was relevant during that period. The Greater Gandharan region was of central importance in the development of Mahayana Buddhism from the 1st century BCE. Its influence increased further with imperial patronage and economic success. Wealthy Buddhist patrons not only had an innate understanding of Indian artistic traditions but were also familiar with the traditions of Hellenistic Bactria, Iran and China. In order to satisfy the demands of their clients, the artists of Gandhara acquainted themselves with these diverse traditions.
