Husband and Wife

Born in 1933 in Bali, Dewa Putu Mokoh studied wayang painting under Gusti Ketut Kobok (Ubud Style painter). Mokoh’s works are characterized by family scenes and children playing, taken from contemporary Balinese daily life, rituals and mystical belief. Stylistically, his paintings (in acrylic and ink on canvas) display the formal values of Balinese paintings of the Ubud style although he has also developed naive stylization that sets him apart from pure adherents of the Ubud school. Decoration and patterns are important elements in Mokoh paintings, their significance equaling the simple narrative or subject matter of his paintings. He has participated in group shows internationally, and was given a solo exhibition in Fukuoka Art Museum in 1995.
