Born in Ninh Thuan, Do Quang Em (B.1942) graduated from Gia Dinh National College of Fine Arts in 1965. Em is inspired by daily life, the society in which he lives, as well as his family and people he knows. In his oil paintings, which are meticulously composed and executed, the objects and people depicted are never a straightforward replication of reality but one that has undergone a transformation in his mind and then, on his canvas. The works are rendered in a photorealistic and surrealistic manner whereby objects of daily life and portraits of people are arranged so that another worldly mood prevails. Employing hyperrealism in painting where imaginary perceptions of the world are painted in a lifelike manner, Em depicts his wife, seated, suspended in a void. Em is particularly interested in the theatrical effects that the style offers him where the high contrast of light and dark heightens the emotive nature of the work.
