Om Mani Padme Hum (Enlightenment Series)

Born in 1962 in Singapore, multi-disciplinary artist Goh Ee Choo is a graduate of Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and London’s Slade School of Fine Arts. Goh won First Prize (Representational Painting category) in the 1985 UOB Painting of the Year Competition, and came to prominence in 1988 with the seminal collaborative exhibition ‘Trimurti’.Goh's works from the early 1990s abstract concepts into minimalist forms, alternating between complex post-modernist theories and spiritual issues. His ‘Light, Knowledge, Structure’ installation was first shown in 'The Rite of Silence' exhibition (1993), arguably marking the maturity of Goh as an installation artist. For Goh, art embodies truth in visual form. Here, allusions to containment and confinement are made with the illuminated fluorescent bulbs protruding out from the urns; the contrasting black and white drawings of boxes recalling the contradictory desire to belong to society yet to think for one’s self.
