Carved on this woodblock print is the doctrine of transmigration through the six worlds described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Often described as a formula of Avalokiteshvara, each syllable of 'om ma ni pad me hum', refers to each of the six worldly realms. This is supposed to provide the devotee the path to liberation in Mahayana Buddhism.
