This is a rare example of a pattern board for the weaving of sacred warp 'ikat pua' (woven cloth) textiles. It was used as a template during the process of tying resists prior to dyeing. By repeating and reversing the orders of the strings, the design of the body of the cloth was created.Warp ikat involves the tying and dyeing of the warp (vertical) threads with the design for the textile prior to weaving.
