Batak shouldercloths (ulos) demonstrate a clearly defined design structure. Weavers had to follow set design types but had freedom to creatively alter each aspect of the design within the specifications. This ulos would have been worn by women and used particularly in bridal exchanges. The multicoloured chevron pattern against a deep red background, which are interspersed with supplementary weft patterning in alternating green and white suggest that this shouldercloth might be from the Holbung or Uluan regions.
