Born in Bandung in 1958, Tisna Sanjaya studied graphic art at the Department of Fine Arts and Design in the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and then at the Hochshule fur Bildende Kunste, in Braunschweig, Germany. Sanjaya is one of the few artists in Indonesia who works in the printmaking technique of etching. “Victim”, completed in 1994, is an etching in which Sanjaya invokes the imagery of the theatre as a metaphor for the social arena. The two-dimensional surface is given considerable depth of field as perspective recedes from the edges to the centre where a sword-wielding figure, symbolizing unchecked violence and abuse, occupies the centre-stage. Below the stage, the floor is densely packed with nightmarish images of abject and tormented figures of the artist's imagination.
