This is the affidavit of Pachajee Pestorajee filed on 8 March 1888 verifying the statement of claim. He was the plaintiff in the case between the Attorney General, who was acting on behalf of Pestorajee, and Thomas Scott, James Guthrie Davidson, and Namahoy Framjee (defendants). There were two other defendants named Cawasjee and Dadabhoy Prestorjee who were out of the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements. This affidavit is part of a collection of legal documents from the 19th and early 20th centuries which provides a glimpse into the work of the notable personalities who left their mark on Singapore’s legal history, and the economic and other transactions undertaken by ordinary immigrants in 19th century Singapore that tell stories of misfortune and indebtedness which would otherwise have disappeared from history.
