This amulet or 'hama'il' in Arabic, is decorated with incised floral designs on the front and back. It contains cells arranged concentrically, each containing a letter or number. The letters have numerical values according to the abjad system. The letters and the numbers probably make up the numerical power of one of the 99 names (attributes) of Allah. The pendant would have been worn for protective reasons.
