Chettiar bankruptcy settlement document

This bankruptcy settlement is part of a set of documents that includes a Schedule of Deeds drawn up by the Registrar of Properties. Documents were also drawn up to reconvey an interest in property as security for the repayment of loans. Internal accounts were in Tamil, while official documents were drawn up in English by English-educated lawyers hired by the Chettiars. Before the 1930s, these lawyers were mainly British expatriates. Later, there were more English-educated local Eurasian, Peranakan Chinese and Indian lawyers who acted as go-betweens for the Chettiars and their clients.
