This red-coloured seal was one of the stationery items commonly used by the Chettiars in their course of work. It would have been first melted before being used to stamp documents and envelopes. The seal was kept in one of the compartments of the 'kaipeti' (hand-held box) along with other business-related items used in the 'kittangi' (Chettiar shophouse).
