This sculpture of a kneeling female with a baby was made in Sawankhalok, one of the twin royal cities in the Sukhothai period from the mid 13th to the mid 15th century. Kilns in this region were some of the largest ceramic producers in Southeast Asia at this time. This figurine was made for ritual decapitation to ensure a safe birth.
