This covered box has a landscape design on the cover and a minor band of decoration including wave motifs around the sides. Vietnamese blue-and-white wares were made in the 15th-16th centuries to meet the fall in the supply of Chinese wares when China banned independent trade. The Vietnamese potters carved a share of this overseas market and were quick to develop their kilns to produce blue-and-white wares for sale. Many of these Vietnamese pieces were trade wares exported to the other Southeast Asian countries. Large concentrations of Vietnamese blue-and-white have been found in Indonesia.
