This bowl or khwet, is made from a mixture of bamboo and horsehair. A mixture of clay and lacquer applied in layers was used to strengthen the bamboo core. The final layer of lacquer was mixed with cinnabar pigment to achieve the red colour. The craftsman then engraved the design, and filled the lines in with other colourants. Designs on these fine bowls typically depict scenes from Burmese folklore, the Hindu epic Ramayana, or Buddhist legends such as the Jataka stories of Buddha’s previous lives.
