Thaipusam is a festival Hindus celebrate to worship Lord Murugan, a son of Shiva, who was given a lance by his mother to conquer evil. Festivities usually begin with a chariot procession. Carrying a kavadi - usually through piercing one's body with spikes and metal hooks - is a popular practice that devotees carry out to seek blessings, fulfill vows and offer thanks.
