Masjid Al-Burhani

The spiritual home of the Dawoodi Bohra community in Singapore, Masjid Al-Burhani’s beginnings date back to 1897, when the masjid's first building was erected here. Funded by a prominent merchant Abdoolkayom Moola (A.M.) Essbhoy, the masjid was described as an iconic landmark.

The Dawoodi Bohra community in Singapore are Muslims who began immigrating to Singapore from Gujarat, India, during the late 19th century. Most of them were notable merchants and traders engaged in import-export businesses and dealing in commodities such as timber, tin, rubber, scrap and spices.

The first masjid building served the Dawoodi Bohras till 1955, when it was rebuilt into a four-storey masjid, which was declared opened in 1959. As the community grew, the site was redeveloped in the 1990s and the current 10-storey masjid complex was inaugurated by His Holiness Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the 52nd Head of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra community in 2000.
