Three schools occupied the site which now houses the Goodman Arts Centre. From 1960s to the late 1980s, the site was first used by the Tun Seri Lanang Malay Secondary School.

It was subsequently expanded between 1993 and 1995 in preparation for the new LASALLE College of the Arts. The new school was developed in phases with new facilities catering for different art disciplines. These facilities included the Design and Fine Arts Building and the Music and Drama Building in the first phase and a new library and gallery complex in the subsequent phase. The School of the Arts (SOTA) occupied the site from 2007 to 2009.

In 2010, the National Arts Council announced the establishment of the Goodman Arts Centre as the pilot project under the New Framework for Art Spaces. The redevelopment works for the site increased the number of spaces and the types of spaces available for new artist tenants. Shared facilities, such as galleries, music and dance studios and F&B outlets for the public were also refurbished to attract members of the public to participate in the centre's activities.
