"Falling Short" belongs to a series of works on paper Maung Day made in 2023 during his two-month stay in Southern France as a resident artist at Walden artist residency programme. They emerge from the artist's reflection on the fractured society of his home country, Myanmar, plagued by decades of civil wars. In this series, the central image of piled, colourfully clothed bodies presents a sense of tragic absurdity. For the artist, the state of this tragic absurdity presents itself through the various rhetoric and commentary that have risen amidst the political upheavals all claiming to offer solutions while fear, confusion, and violence continue to reign over the lives of war-weary citizens. The series "Falling Short" pose the question: “how many dead bodies do we need to achieve our political goal?”
