This is an invitation card designed for Gilles Massot's solo exhibition "Singapore... Boy, Time Flies with You" held at Art Square gallery on Kim Seng Road from 8 to 17 June 1991. Staged in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of his stay in Singapore, the exhibition was dedicated as a love letter to his host city which he had come to know quite well and love in many ways. It featured paintings and drawings of street scenes and people rendered in a pared-down, child-like, naïve art style, alongside photographic sculptures depicting local architectural elements which he termed 'photo-objects'.The works were developed from diaries Massot kept while travelling, and collectively reflected his profound interest in the intriguing interplay between photography and painting. Above all, his photo-objects challenged the two-dimensional and documentational quality of photographs by accentuating their engagement with space, volume and materiality as sculptural forms. They were representative of the rise of a conceptual photographic language in Singapore, which marked a departure from the picturesque aesthetics of salon photography dominant from the 1950s to 1980s.
