This is the 1986 diary of Chan Shu May. Chan Shu May was born in Jiangsu, China in 1920, and subsequently moved to Singapore. She was with the Medical Auxiliary Service (MAS) during World War Two. The MAS provided medical aid during the Japanese bombing of Singapore. She then worked as a midwife from the 1950s to the 1970s before becoming a fulltime housewife. As a housewife, she monitored the activities and expenses of the household. She meticulously recorded the daily activities and expenses of her husband (“Polk”) and herself (“May”) in her diaries that span 1979 to 1991.
