Resistante (1994) and Tragic Tendency (1996) mark the maturation of Dolorosa’s practice after her return from Central St Martins in 1983, where she learned to anchor her sculptural subjects in an exploration of the human body’s anatomy. Both works exemplify her shift towards figuration, moving away from her earlier abstract formalist works in the 1980s. From the mid-1980s to the 1990s, Dolorosa continued to explore different mediums and methods, such as sand casting, bronze casting, bronze patination, and marble sculpting through short courses in the United States, all while serving as a teacher and Vice-Dean of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (Institut Kesenian Jakarta).
