The Sorrowful Procession is distinct in its tendency toward hinting at a larger, more abstract space beyond the figures, which are rendered in an archaic, semi-abstract manner. Yet despite its cosmological undertones, the work can be read in relation to the political turmoil of mid-1950s Singapore, when many artists expressed disillusionment toward the colonial establishment following the events of World War II.
