This is a customary wedding certificate from the Japanese Occupation. The certificate dates to 1942 and contains auspicious motifs that symbolically wish the couple a blissful marriage. The animals and motifs depicted on the certificate are drawn in pairs to symbolise the newlyweds. The certificate was signed by a witness, officiant and the couple, Ong Heng Beng and Khoo Siew Jno [sic]. While this certificate records the marriage, it was not until the passing of the Women's Charter in 1961 that such marriages were officially and legally recorded by the state.
