This is a portrait of one of Yuen Kiew Physical Association’s (新加坡榕侨体育会) first instructors, Guo Cheng Zhang (郭承章, 1885–1958). Hailing from Fuqing county in Fujian province, China, Guo migrated to Malaya in the early 20th century as a martial arts trainer, cultivating a following of over hundreds of disciples. Following his move to Singapore, he contributed to the establishment of Yuen Kiew Physical Association with founding members such as Sia Mok Tai (谢沐泰), and assumed the role of the pioneering instructor. An expert in the “White Crane Fist” (白鹤拳), Guo actively promoted the technique, and gave rise to its enduring prominence within Yuen Kiew, such that the association adopted the representative emblem of a crane with its claws poised in a fighting stance.
