Together with "The Reluctant Heroine - Chai Ling" and "Salute the Courageous II", this selection of monotypes are early examples of Amanda’s woodcut technique which she learnt from her days at Lasalle and was created during a time that she was sharing her studio with Vincent Leow and Han Sai Por in Seletar, Singapore. In terms of composition, they show the nascent of the use of the body and figurative towards her later assemblages and elements in her installations. These works resonated with her growing awareness of herself as an overseas and racialised Chinese amidst the language and cultural policies in Singapore.
