Gift of Wee Kong Chai family

Wee Kong Chai started on his sculpture practice in 1970, after he returned to Singapore from his Paris training. His time in Paris exposed him to a variety of sculptural works, which inspired him to explore this medium to depict local life in Singapore. Wee’s works are made from local materials and wood that he collected from throughout Singapore. This decision emphasizes his connection to his homeland and his commitment to incorporating local elements into his works. In Self-portrait (c. 1980s-1990s), the use of nails produces a dotted pattern on the face and head, adding depth and created a distinctive visual texture. This unique use of nails highlights the artist’s innovation of traditional sculptural practices.
