In the early twentieth century, colonial administrators encouraged the teaching of domestic science, with subjects including hygiene, cooking, nutrition and infant care. At the time, this was intended to prepare a girl for her role as a woman, which was largely confined to marriage and motherhood. Hygiene was seen as particulalry important to reduce high infant mortality. This book was sold in a stationers shop on Loke Yew Street, and details ways to make a home clean and healthful. While the book is written for an audience in a Western country and climate, it was also distributed in sold in Singapore.
