This is a Cubic 88 computer, which was one of Creative Technology’s first products after the company was formed in Singapore in 1981. The computer was modelled after the Apple II, a popular series of computers produced since 1977, and intended as a cheaper alternative. It was succeeded by the Cubic 99 computer in 1984, which was the first personal computer to be fully designed and made in Singapore. Some of the special features of the Cubic 99 were already present in the Cubic 88, such as a speech synthesizer which allowed the computer to “speak” in English and Mandarin. The donor purchased the computer, monitor and floppy disk drive while in secondary school in the early 1980s. He decided to purchase the set from his computer school, the Comsertrac School of Computer Training, after attending lessons on BASIC programming for leisure. With the joystick and paddle controllers that were purchased separately, he also played games such as Pong, Space Invaders, Snake and Digger which were popular in the 1980s.
