This is an Apple IIe computer, which was a model from the popular and long-running series of Apple II personal computers produced since 1977. The Apple II was one of the first mainstream computers developed for consumers, and was designed to be more user-friendly for business, educational and personal purposes. The computer was purchased together with an Apple Monitor II, which was a cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitor, and Disk II, a floppy disk drive. The donor and his older brother received the computer as a gift from their parents after his brother completed the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in the early 1980s. It was their family’s first computer. The donor and his brother used the computer for playing games as well as for schoolwork, such as creating spreadsheets and writing compositions. The donor’s brother also learnt about coding in languages like Basic, Cobol and Fortran, from sources such as computer schools, salesmen and interest groups.
