Edibles – NTUC Finest, Simply Finest, Laksa Leaf, 150 g (2021) are part of a series of works experimenting with embossed printing techniques and natural dye prints. Using untreated spices and herbs, these applied techniques bring forth their natural colours, producing a distinct impression on the paper fibre. Although reminiscent of the analytical schemes typically found in biological studies, these imprints are arranged in geometric compositions. Their inherent and natural detail suggests freedom in their organically varied forms. These artworks were produced during Yang's residency at STPI - Creative Workshop & Gallery. Using mundane materials, Yang's experiment with paper and organic matter is a commentary towards transforming everyday foods and spices into works of art that trace history, culture and economics. Each print in the Edibles series is an impression of vegetables from a single packet purchased from a local grocery store or a wet market stall in Singapore. Furthering her interests in the varied textures, colours and forms afforded by the range of natural produce, Edibles explores their residual possibilities.
