This is a black and white photograph depicting the celebration of the Festival of the Seven Sisters (or also known as Festival of the Seven Fairies) (qi jie dan七姐诞). The photo was submitted for a photograph competition. Festival of the Seven Sisters is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, more commonly known as Qixi (七夕). The Seven Sisters’ Festival was brought to Singapore by Cantonese immigrants, particularly amahs, female domestic servants who were sworn to a life of celibacy. A unique feature of the festival is the showcasing of elaborate crafts, which ranged from embroidery to miniature objects, like the one prominently displayed within this photograph.
