A stockpile of sand in Bedok, eastern Singapore, as seen from a public road. This reserve, which belongs to the country’s public housing authority – the Housing and Development Board – is ringed by two layers of fencing and used for land reclamation works. Land-scarce Singapore has had a long history of land reclamation, one that can be traced back to the 19th century. This photograph is from Singaporean photographer Sim Chi Yin’s Shifting Sands series, which documents the role sand plays in land reclamation and the impact it has on the social, environmental and political landscapes in Singapore and the region today.
