This reclining figure depicts Edward Harrison (1674–1732), Governor of Fort St. George, Madras, from 11 July 1711 to 8 January 1717. He is shown wearing a long-sleeved cuffed white shirt beneath a long loose fitting banyan robe, and slip-on mules. His head is shaven, a typical fashion for European men in the 18th century. Clay figures of this type became popular among European and Asian traders as well as Chinese merchants, workers, and officials in the early 18th century, and the trend continued into the early19th century.
