Sebastian Münster was a German professor of Hebrew, as well as a mathematician and cartographer, working in Basel. This map of Sumatra, accompanied by an illustration of a man riding an elephant, appeared in Münster’s Cosmographica, which included the newly-emerging geographical information from European voyages of exploration, alongside fanciful illustrations.
