This jar with a streaky brown glaze was one of more than 20 similar vessels that were exhumed from Bukit Brown Cemetery between 2013 to 2014. It originally contained human skeletal remains that have since been cremated after the exhumation was done. Such jars appear to have been used for reburials at Bukit Brown Cemetery. Deceased people, who had previously been buried at other sites had their exhumed skeletal remains placed in such jars when they were reburied at Bukit Brown Cemetery. The practice of secondary burials and the use of large jars to contain the skeletal remains also took place in parts of southern China.
