Gift of Mdm Chin Siat Mui
This 1966 orange cheongsam belonged to Mdm Chin Siat Mui. Mdm Chin was a school teacher at Teck Whye Primary School and used to wear the cheongsam to school, together with 2 inch high heels. She liked wearing a cheongsam because she would not have to coordinate a blouse and bottom, and could look presentable and feminine at the same time. This cheongsam is made of Thai silk. In the 1960s, Singapore women would often purchase local or regional fabrics such as Kelantan silk and sari and adapt them into a cheongsam, creating a new set of modern aesthetics rooted in Southeast Asia.
