This postcard depicts Sri Mariamman Temple, built by Naraina Pillai on South Bridge Road. The temple was later enlarged in 1843. The street beside the temple shows a rickshaw puller and a tram. The presence of the tram, juxtaposed with the temple, highlights how modernity progresses in Singapore even as more traditional forms of life remain. The temple doors are open, signaling that the temple was being used for worship at that moment.
