Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. During his founding of Singapore and his concurrent administration of Bencoolen in Sumatra as Lieutenant-Governor, Peter Auber was Assistant Secretary of the East India Company, and in that capacity kept him updated on Company politics. In this book, Auber appraises Raffles’ actions and argues that they led to the eventual establishment of a demarcation line between British and Dutch spheres of influence.
