1820 issue of The Annual Register

While establishing the British trading settlement on Singapore in 1819, Raffles was concurrently Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen in Sumatra. This 1820 issue of The Annual Register contains Raffles’ protest issued in this capacity against the Dutch attempt to re-establish control over Palembang. This protest, and Raffles’ dispatch of a small British force to Palembang to counter the Dutch earned him a censure from the Directors of the East India Company and the British Government.
