Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. This letter is part of a collection of letters he wrote to his cousin, the Revd Thomas Raffles, an influential religious leader in Liverpool to whom Raffles was close and with whom he corresponded frequently. It was written from London during Raffles’ return to England in 1816, with some details on his translation work on Javanese poetry and the clearance of his Javanese collections through customs. He also mentions the difficulties was facing with the engravings for his The History of Java publication for which he was making final preparations for the manuscript.
